Empowering the Future: When a Hundred College Students Encounter Global Issues

Last week, when I received a certificate of appreciation for the "Global Youth Advocacy Simulation United Nations Assembly" from a representative of the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), what flashed back in my mind was the report hall filled with nearly a hundred college students three days earlier—their eyes sparkled with curiosity about global issues, reminiscent of myself ten years ago. This certificate states, "In recognition of contributions to advancing learning and deep dialogue," but the real medal is the sparks of thought that collided with the young people that day.

When discussing "How Youth Can Participate in Global Governance," a sociology student raised their hand and asked, "We always say 'change the world,' but can individual power really address systemic issues?" This question reminded me of my own confusion when I first participated in a Model United Nations, and it made me realize: what youth need is not empty slogans, but thinking tools that transform grand issues into actionable pathways. Thus, we broke down the granularity of "global challenges": from localized responses to climate change, to youth innovation in the digital divide, to how cultural diversity can become a bridge for cooperation.

When I saw students drawing mind maps for "Campus Sustainability Plans" during group discussions, and when I heard the viewpoints that erupted during their debates on "Technology Ethics," I suddenly understood: what we call "empowerment" is not a one-way transfer of knowledge, but igniting the spark in everyone's heart of "What can I do?" Certificates may yellow with time, but the dialogues about responsibility, collaboration, and social innovation are taking root in the hearts of the young. Just as the United Nations logo on the certificate symbolizes—real change begins with every individual willing to listen and act. I look forward to walking alongside more youth, making global issues no longer distant, and enabling change to happen here and now.
